How It Works
Can a heated walkway be added under an existing path?
Yes, but the method depends on the current surface and base depth. Some existing walkways can be retrofitted without full removal; others need partial rebuilding. The installer assesses the base condition during the initial evaluation and puts the required scope in writing before any work is booked.
Does it work under both concrete and pavers?
Yes. Concrete installs use a two-stage pour to lock the cable in position. Paver installs embed the cable in the compacted base layer before pavers are set. Both methods require the cable to sit at the correct depth, the installer confirms this during the heat load calculation.
What happens if I delay installing a system on a shaded path?
Shaded north-facing paths in Boulder’s foothills refreeze faster than sun-exposed surfaces. Continued salt use degrades concrete and paver joints over time, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles widen existing cracks. Delaying means more surface repair cost alongside the eventual system installation.
Do I need the entire walkway heated, or just part of it?
Partial coverage is a common choice. Many homeowners heat only the main walking line from the street or parking area to the door. The installer calculates the heat load for the targeted zone and the written scope reflects exactly which area is covered.
Will a heated walkway eliminate all shoveling?
It eliminates shoveling on the heated zone. Adjacent areas outside the cable coverage still need clearing. The system is designed for the specific surface area and snow load of your site, so performance expectations are set in the written scope before installation.
Is this only useful in heavy snowfall, or does it help with freezing rain too?
The temperature sensor activates the system whenever surface conditions approach freezing, including freezing rain, frost, and shaded refreezing after a storm. Heavy snowfall is one use case, but persistent low-temperature refreezing on shaded paths is often the more frequent trigger in Boulder.
