How It Works

Is radiant heat worth adding to a garage floor?

It makes the most sense when the slab hasn’t been poured yet, adding heat at that stage costs far less than retrofitting later. Garages used as workshops or hobby spaces in Boulder’s winters see the clearest benefit, since an unheated slab can stay cold well into spring.

What happens if I skip the heated slab now and add it later?

Retrofitting over an existing slab means electric mats and an added finish layer, which raises floor height and can conflict with door clearances. You also lose the option of hydronic PEX tubing embedded in concrete, which has lower long-term running costs for larger spaces.

How is the system installed in a new garage slab?

Insulation panels and a vapor barrier go down first. PEX tubing is then fastened in loops at planned spacing, pressure-tested to confirm no leaks, and concrete is poured over the top. The sequence matters, skipping the pressure test means any leak is sealed under the slab.

Does a heated garage floor use a lot of electricity?

Usage depends on slab square footage, insulation R-value, and how many hours the system runs. Insulation under the slab is the biggest efficiency factor, without it, heat goes into the ground. Larger garages often switch to hydronic tubing to reduce long-term operating costs.

Can the layout cause uneven heat or cold spots?

Yes. Tubing or mats placed without mapping fixed workbenches, cabinets, or walls leaves areas that never reach temperature. Layout planning before installation is what prevents cold spots, it can’t be corrected after the concrete is poured.
