Can heated stairs be added to existing steps, or only new builds?

What surfaces are compatible with embedded stair heating?
Concrete, stone, and paver stairs all support embedded cable installation. The cable or mat is placed in the mortar, bedding layer, or concrete before the finish surface is set, so it is fully covered and bonded.
Will the system melt snow on its own without manual switching?
Yes, when paired with a temperature sensor and moisture sensor. The controller activates the cables automatically when conditions meet the threshold, so the stairs warm up before ice forms rather than after you notice it.
What happens if I delay installing a permanent system through another Boulder winter?
Repeated freeze-thaw cycles on untreated concrete or stone stairs accelerate surface cracking and spalling. Each winter without a heating system also means continued slip risk on icy treads, which is the primary safety concern for entry stairs.
Is a heated stair mat the same as a built-in system?
No. A surface mat is a temporary, top-mounted option that can shift or trap moisture. A built-in system embeds cable under the tread finish for permanent, edge-to-edge coverage that does not move or degrade at the surface.
What needs to be checked before choosing a heated stair setup?
Tread depth, surface material, stair count, and available power supply all affect the design. The installer also confirms where the controller and sensors will be located so the system fits the entry safely and the wiring run is practical.
